Bozeman, Montana: Campgrounds, Epic Trails & One Ball-Obsessed Jack Russell

Bernie gazing out over Montana

We’ve only visited Bozeman in the summertime, so if you’re curious about winter vanlife here, we can’t help you. What we can tell you is that summer vanlife in Bozeman is a total dream and we just keep going back. Here is your vanlifer’s guide to the best spots in Bozeman, Montana.

🌄 Why Go? (Besides the Coffee and Craft Beer)

Bozeman is a hiker’s paradise wrapped in a cozy city with just the right amount of bougie. The downtown is charming and walkable, with local shops, great restaurants, and just enough bougie to make you feel like you’re still treating yourself — even if you slept in a parking lot.

Need big-box convenience? You’ve got Target, Walmart, Home Depot, and more.

Love the outdoors? You’re in the right place.

  • In-town hikes: Drinking Horse Mountain, College M, Sourdough Trail
  • Day trip: Hyalite Reservoir (20 miles out and totally worth the drive)
  • Madison River: Camp on it or go tubing!

🛻 Where to Stay

Bozeman has it all: boondocking, fairgrounds, RV parks, campgrounds, and even some low-key street parking.

Gallatin County Fairgrounds

Yes, it’s basically a parking lot.
But hear us out — it’s a prime location

Details:

  • 💸 $40/night with electric, $20/night without
  • 💧 Water fill available (no sewer hookups)
  • 🚽 Dump station at the Conoco nearby (free with a purchase)
  • 🚴‍♀️ Bikable/walkable, everywhere (0.8 miles to downtown, 1.4 to Planet Fitness, 1 to Bend Beyond Yoga)
  • 🐶 Westlake Park across the street = good for daily dog ball sessions

🌲 Hyalite Reservoir

Paddleboarding at Hyalite Reservoir

If you want scenery, this is the move. The mountain trails are gorgeous and the reservoir is the perfect paddleboarding spot. About 20 miles out of town, with campgrounds around $20/night and tons of dispersed camping. This is what vanlife in Bozeman is all about!
We found a great dispersed spot near Grotto Falls — big, quiet, and perfect for letting Bernie run laps like the little psycho he is.

Heads-up:

  • 📡 No cell service
  • 🌲 Too many trees for Starlink to work well
  • 💻 Need internet? The reservoir parking lot has a clear view and a solid Starlink signal
  • 💧 No water fill: we waited ‘til we were back in town
  • 💩 No dump: we waited ‘til we were back in town

🛶 Madison River (East of Town)

Peaceful, remote, and lined with huge campsites for $8 a night. Plus, floating tubers go by waving like you’re royalty.

  • ☀️ Wide open = Starlink friendly
  • 💧 Water fill at one of the campgrounds (possibly Bear Trap North)
  • 💩 No dump : we waited ‘til we were back in town

🏕️ Bozeman Trail RV Park

If you’re looking for full hookups and a few more amenities, Bozeman Trail RV Park is a solid (though slightly bougie-priced 💸) option.

  • 🚐 Sites – Spacious with picnic tables, fire rings and gorgeous views
  • 🚿 Clean restrooms and bathhouse
  • 🧺 Laundry room – cheap laundry
  • 🏪 Small convenience store – firewood, beer, camp essentials (no vegan marshmallows or tofu dogs)

💪 Working Out on the Road

🏋️ Planet Fitness

Your standard PF. Clean, reliable, and full of post-hike showers.

🧘‍♀️ Bend Beyond Yoga

My happy place. This spot offers:

  • Hot 26 & 2 classes that’ll cook you from the inside out
  • Creative and welcoming flow classes
  • Weekly passes
  • Kind, community-centered vibes
  • Limited showers, but everyone’s cool about it

🧘‍♀️ Bozeman Power Yoga

Luxe option for a treat-yourself day. They provide everything (mat, towels, fancy toiletries) and have gorgeous showers. It’s more expensive (no traveler pass), and their class style didn’t totally click with me, but that post-class rinse was luxurious.

🥕 Groceries & Food

We’re mostly-vegan vanlifers, so food matters. A lot.

  • 🥦 Bozeman Food Co-op: Pricey but fun. Grab a fresh juice and pretend you’re local.
  • 🥬 Whole Foods, Smith’s, Safeway, Albertson’s: All the grocery staples
  • 🍻 Mountains Walking Brewery: Fantastic apps + drinks (but no dogs allowed on the patio 😢). Bernie chilled in the AC van while we sipped guilt-free.

🚐 Final Thoughts: Is Bozeman Worth It for Vanlifers?

Bozeman gave us the best of all worlds: yoga and weights, hikes and hot coffee, wild trails and Whole Foods. Bernie had grassy spots to chase his ball, and we had everything we needed to keep vanlife just bougie enough.

If you’re vanlifing through Montana in summer, Bozeman is a must.
